Help for Twinned Town

The local branch of the far-left, IU in Almuñécar has registered a motion for debate in the next Municipal Plenary Session concerning Baracoa in Cuba.

They want an institutional condemnation of the recent economic aggressions against Cuba and the implementation of aid actions for the Cuban municipality of Baracoa, which is twinned with Almuñécar.

The motion says, “the systematic blockade generates shortages and affects Baracoa with particular severity. Due to its complex geography, this sister municipality faces additional difficulties in accessing basic supplies when transport and energy are compromised.”

The motion actually has four points to it:

  • Institutional Condemnation: that the Town Council express its total rejection of the (US) Executive Order of January the 29th, 2026, and all policies involving an economic blockade against Cuba.
  • Local Solidarity Campaign: the organisation of a municipal collection of non-perishable food and medical supplies (such as antibiotics, painkillers, and bandages) specifically destined for Baracoa.
  • Pressure on the Central Government: to urge the Government of Spain to demand before the U.S. and in international forums the cessation of energy sanctions against the Cuban civilian population.
  • Spreading the Agreements: to forward these decisions to the Cuban Embassy in Spain and to the Cuban friendship associations within the province.

Francisco Fernández, the spokesperson for the party, said, “Almuñécar cannot remain indifferent to the suffering caused by external decisions that violate human rights, especially with a town officially twinned with our municipality for nearly half a century, such as Baracoa.”

Editorial comment: don’t hold your breath because the Mayor didn’t listen to demands for him to condemn the Israeli destruction of the twinned Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis.
