Nerja Street Name Change

In a recent Plenary Meeting of the Nerja Town Council, a motion to change the name of Calle Almirante Ferrandiz to Calle Cristo was approved.

It was proposed by the governing party, PP and supported by the socialist PSOE but opposed by Podemos-IU con Nerja.

Mayor Armijo says that Calle Cristo was its name as far back as 1821 until 1903 when it was changed to Calle General Ferrándiz and later Calle Almirante Ferrándiz, and so it remained for over 123 years; i.e., longer than it ever was named Calle Cristo.

José Ferrándiz y Niño (1847–1918) was a Spanish soldier/sailor and politician who became a vicealmirante (vice admiral) in the Spanish Navy. He was born in Sevilla and died in Madrid. As far as we know, he does not have any connection with Nerja; i.e., ever lived there.

He reached the rank of captain in 1903, when he was appointed Minister of the Navy and was in office until 1904 and then again from 1907 to 1909.

Anyway, it is not to be confused with a street named after Antonio Ferranis, who was an actor famous for his roll in the Verano Azul, TV series set mainly in Nerja in the 80s.

Lastly, to give you your bearings, Calle General Ferrándiz links Calle Antonio Ferranis to Calle Castilla Pérez.

Editorial comment: the trouble is when politicians decide to fart around with street names, everybody who lives there has to change their ID cards, which display their home address, and which is a right royal pain.

Furthermore, it’s the right-wing parties like the Partido Popular that hanker to give street names religious ones, which was the case in Almuñécar when the PP changed the street leading up to the church from the town-hall square from Cuesta de La Iglesia (Church Hill) to Calle Jesús Nazareno. The Original name was much more logical as it was descriptive.
