A middle-aged hiker died as the result of a fall in the Sierra Almijara, within the municipality of Nerja.

The man had gone missing and his body was finally located by a Guardia Civil helicoper on Monday in a rocky area of difficult access.

The helicopter managed to land nearby and retrieve the body and fly it to Nerja’s heliport – see photo.

The coroner gave permission at 17.07h for the body to be taken to the Instituto de Medicina Legal for an autopsy to determine the dause of death.

The Sierra Almijara is one of the mountain ranges included in the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, and is very popular with hikers and mountain climbers. Sierra Almjara straddles the municipal boarder between Málaga and Granada, and is the backdrop to Otlívar.
