Although there is justifiable opposition to the proliferation of tourist flats in Spanish cities, sabotaging key safes remains just vandalism.
The culprits are allegedly a group of individuals who oppose living accommodation being turned into a businesses and have been carrying out a campaign, even signing their acts of sabotage with sticker.

This sabotage/vandalism takes the form of covering the combination mechanism of key safes at the entrance to a property using silicone, as can be seen in the accompanying photo. This prevents the paying guests from gaining entrance unless the owner lets them in and provides a new set of keys during their stay.
Now, we’re not talking about one or two acts of sabotage, but closer to 500, most of which are in the historic centre of the city of Granada. This number hasn’t been verified but what is certain is that the police have received a good number of complaints from property owners.
This situation came to light after the Asociación de Viviendas Turísticas y Alojamientos Rurales de Granada published a communique, warning tourist-flat owners to be on guard against it because in just one night, with the culprits doing the rounds, they can knock out about 5,000 euros in damages for the targeted owners in total.
“These attacks have generated situations of insecurity, conflict, and cancellations, severely damaging Granada’s tourism image. They have become a frequent and repeated occurrence, consistently occurring at night within specific areas of the historic centre.” read the online communiqué.
