The Policía Nacional arrested the mother of an 8-year-old girl because the child repeatedly turned up to school with bruises and scratch marks.
It was a school in the city of Málaga which alerted the police to the situation on the 12th of February, asking for them to investigate.
Officers were sent to the school to interview the teachers, who explained that the girl had been coming to school with different injuries for the last three months, with marks on her face, arms and legs.
The teachers explained that when they questioned her about how she had come about the bruises and scratches, she always said that she got them from falling down or other small accidents whilst she was playing.
However, on the latest occasion they found out that they had been caused by somebody wielding a belt or slipper, including hitting her face, allegedly carried out by her mother. So they decided to take her to a centro de salud because she had a black eye and bruises on her thigh, as well as one on her hand.
The doctors activated the protocol where children are involved in suspected cases of physical mistreatment and contacted the mother, asking her to come round, which she did. The police officers were also waiting there and she was arrested.
In the meantime, the child was left in the custody of a friend of her mother’s, pending the Servicio de Protección de Menores investigation.
