The Junta is considering the possibility of revising the ban on recreational fishing in the Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) off Punta de la Mona in La Herradura.
The decision is based on improvements in biodiversity observed in studies conducted by experts from the Ministry of The Environment and researchers from the University of Granada, according to the provincial representative for the Junta.

The Asociación de Pescadores Deportivos de la Costa Tropical, which leads the opposition to the ban in the protected area, called a meeting to analyse this announcement.
The Junta pointed out that the law itself already included the possibility of reviewing the measures, “once improvements in the conservation status of protected habitats and species are proven.” However, they specified that the study “is not finished” and that, even if biodiversity data remain positive, it would not imply an immediate repeal of the ban.
The Asociación de Pescadores Deportivos is backed in its objection to the law by the Town Hall and a collection of 3,000 signatures.
The recreational fishermen consider the law to be discriminatory, as it allows activity for diving schools in La Herradura which, they claim, also impact the environment.
However, scientific and environmental groups, such as the University of Granada’s Aula del Mar and the Buxus Association (ecologists), have urged the Junta not to back down, citing the “degradation” of the seabed caused by years of poor practices.
