The Río Guadalfeo fed not only water to crops, but also sand for the Motril and Salobreña beaches... and then they built the Rules Dam.
At the time (the mid 80s) The Ministry for Public Works knew that this supply of silt and sand to the coast would be interruped and that consequently, the beaches would gradually diminish in extent. They stated as much in their technical reports.

They even suggested artificially topping up the beaches to counter this, as well as beach defences such as breakwaters.
However, with the dam releasing massive amounts of water and the river running bank-to-bank, sand and silt has been carried to the sea at either side of the river mouth building small sand bars.
Sadly, it is only temporary and perhaps we will regret having thrown away so much water… although there was no alternative.
