Nerja Town Council has approved the project to return the space occuppied by a restaurant under the Balcón de Europa to its original origins as a viewpoint for the general public.
This spot, popularly known as La Reola, will have 291,000 euros spent on it to return it to the way it was until the early 1960s. In 1962 it was been turned into the Restaurante Rey Alfonso (the same king as the statue on the paseo above it).

However, the restaurant closed down in 2020 and has remained closed since then. The Town Hall took back the ownership of the premises in December 2023 after the restaurant owners terminated the lease owing to Covid-19 restrictions.
The funds for this conversion job will be part financed from the municipal coffers, with the rest coming from the Junta de Andalucía through a special grant for towns that rely on tourism.
Mayor José Alberto Armijo described the idea as, “One of the most significant moves taken on the Balcón de Europa in recent years.”
