The documentary, El Agua es Nuestra (The Water is Ours) was screened on  the 11th of last month, at the Centro Cultural Federico García Lorca in Padul.

The Water is Ours, which was directed by Óscar Berdullas, reflects on water, territory, and the climate crisis, and was nominated for The Best Social Documentary at the VI Granada International Film Festival – Lorca Awards.

The screening was organised by the Town Hall and the platform for the Defensa del Agua del Valle de Lecrín. Admission was free.

The film is centered around a quote attributed to Gandhi: “There is enough water for human need, but not for human greed.” The documentary provides an in-depth examination of the bottled-water industry in Andalusia and its effects on health and ecosystems within the current context of drought and pollution.

The documentary features testimonies from the Plataforma del Agua del Valle de Lecrín, which has spent years denouncing a project that aims to extract over 250,000 litres of water per day.

Local residents warn that this initiative is a direct threat to the region, stating, “Water is the heart of the Lecrín Valley.”

Furthermore, the film pointed out that according to the Ley de Aguas, any form of privatisation of this essential resource is prohibited due to its vital importance for life, the economy, and the environment.

Specifically, the documentary underscores the risk a new bottling plant would pose to the Padul Wetlands; a protected natural area that depends on the aquifers that the company Aguas Bellavista S.L. plans to exploit.

Beyond the ecological impact, the film reminds viewers that these aquifers are the primary water reserve for an area that relies heavily on agriculture and rural tourism.
