Being bolshy towards a police officer when you're still going through the youthful years of 'spoty mode' can get you into trouble.
This is the case of a minor who just lost his appeal in the Provincial Appeals Court in Granada and will have to either do 70 hours of community service or, alternatively, twelve months of socio-educational tasks involving “impulse control through handwritten essays of at least ten pages.” Oh, and he must also pay €12,300 in compensation to a Policía Local officer.

The incident occurred on the night of December the 9th, 2023. A police patrol arrived at Plaza Victoria in the Albaicín district after receiving a report of a large gathering of young people drinking in public.
The officers stopped their patrol car on Calle San Juan de los Reyes, where unidentified youths greeted them with a barrage of glass bottles that struck the vehicle. An officer jumped out the patrol car and began chasing one of the youths, who ignored orders to stop while laughing gleefully. The officer eventually caught him.
However, the minor repeatedly hammered the officer’s thumb with his fist. As a result, the officer suffered a dislocated right thumb. He required surgery and spent 144 days recovering. He now has a permanent limitation in his thumb’s mobility.
The young man’s legal representation had argued that there was no evidence against the accused and that an error in assessment had been made, given that the court had “contradictory accounts from the minor and the officer.” However, the court ruled that “the appeal would not be upheld after analysing the grounds alleged by the defence.”
The Provincial Court emphasised that the minor admitted to being at the location of the drinking party where large bottles of beer were thrown at the officers and their vehicle. He also admits to having fled, although he denies injuring the officer during his arrest.
On the other hand, the officer’s statement “is clear” and identifies “without a doubt” the young man as the individual who threw one of the bottles that forced him to take refuge in the patrol car and whom he later arrested. The officer’s colleagues corroborated the part of the events they had witnessed. Additionally, the forensic doctor declared that the officer’s injuries “are consistent with a punch.”
