The road-haulage company, Transportes Peñalver e Hijos, denied having a dangerous bonfire in their yard despite such accusations made by Ecologistas en Acción.
The Salobreña-based company claimed that they had incinerated vegetable waste and had the required permit from the Junta de Andalucía, obtained on the 17th of October.
Ecologists in Action had raised concerns alleging that the site has been plagued by urban-planning, environmental, and safety violations for over eight years.
In April 2017, Ecologists in Action reported the company to the Junta’s Ministry of the Environment over its parking area with large, fuel tanks sited a short distance from hundreds of homes and on protected landscape area and that it “lacked the necessary permits.”
In February 2018, the Junta informed the Salobreña Town Council of this situation and urged it to exercise its powers regarding urban-planning regulations.
However, the ecologists group claims it never received a response from the Town Council, despite reiterating its complaint in March of the same year and requesting information about the municipal actions concerning the parking area.
The said installations are just below the N-340 at the end of the trading estate, as you come up to the western-most entrance junction for Salobreña.
The manager of Transportes Peñalver e Hijos, Ylenia Peñalver, says that the installations are completely legal with all the required paperwork, otherwise it wouldn’t be open.
As for the bonfire, the manager points out that it was watched over all the time and that the yard not only has fire extinguishers in several places within the yard but also has Plan de Emergencia.
