Villages Get Hand Out

The Provincial Councillor for the Demographic Challenge Department, María Vera, announced a new line of aid budgeted with 360,000 euros, for small villages.

Any village in the Province of Granada with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants will receive a grant to finance Christmas decorations & lighting for its streets, squares and public buildings.

In other words, 102 small municipalities can apply for a grant, as long as they have experienced a loss of population over the last ten years. You see, the object of these grants is to counter the loss of village inhabitants, as young people move out in search of work.

Councillor Vera says that its not just about “Christmas adornments but rather to generate illusion, gatherings and life in their streets during these so special days.”

The fact is that many young parents who moved away from their home villages return at Christmas so that their kids can spend Christmas as they did when they were children in the village. It’s also a time to reunite with ex-school mates who also moved away but return for Christmas.

So, how much money are we talking about per village? Each village with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants will receive 3,529 euros to higher street decorations, 3-King floats and costumes, etc.
