Azucenas Fire

The Motril Fire Service was called out to deal with a fire behind Playa de Las Azucenas on Sunday.

The emergency call centre, 112, received an alert around 04.45h, who immediately despatched the municipal fire service and patrols both from the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local.

The fire started in a picnic area involving a pergola (open wooden structure offering shade) and all indications are that the fire was deliberate. The structure was completely destroyed, according to the Councillor for Beaches, José Peña.

Thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire service, it was put out before it could spread to surrounding vegetation. Fire personnel also desmantled the charred remains of the pergola.

“Unfortunately, we woke up this morning to discover that one of the picnic-area pergolas, which had been erected not long ago, had been destroyed by fire,” said Councillor Peña.

The destroyed installation was part of a programme to improve the said beach area with a total budget of 239,000 euros, providing area of shade, installing wooden pathways and improving access.
