The Chronicle of A Hysteria

On the 23rd of last month the book, Historia de una Hysteria,  was presented at the 1616 Bookshop on Calle Federico García Lorca.

It is a chronicle of witch hunts, which entails an in-depth investigation into the mechanisms of power, fear, and control that marked centuries of superstition.

“Behind the term ‘witch’ are stories of brave, independent, healing, and wise women who were victims of their time,” explained the author and historian, Raquel Berenguer, adding, “I was interested in reclaiming their voices and their dignity.”

In this book, she delved into historical texts, court documents, and testimonies of the time: “It was a long and meticulous research project. I reviewed original sources and actual trials to reconstruct how fear was created and what role religion and politics played in that process,” Berenguer explained.

Through relatable and accessible language, Berenguer proposes a critical review of the past to better understand what we are experiencing now. “At its core, this book speaks of how fear and ignorance can recur if we forget what we were capable of. Remembering these women is a form of historical justice,” she concluded.
