Yet another town along the Costa Tropical has begun the modification of its traffic bylaws to counter the dangerous use of electric scooters.
The measure will cover the use of all Vehículos de Movilidad Personal (VMP) especially electric scooters on municipal streets and public spaces, with the aim of safeguarding pedestrians and improving the control of the paseo marítimo (seafront promenade).

The reason being is that there have been several incidents during the summer involving electric scooters in this seafront area, explained Mayor Toñi Antequera.
To date, the municipality of Gualchos/Castell de Ferro does not have a specific bylaw governing the use of such vehicles, which is why the Mayor believes that they need one to avoid users causing accidents and trouble residence and visitors.
The bylaw will stipulate the minimum age permitted, the wearing of helmets, an obligatory vehicle insurance and a restriction that allows only one person on them.
Where they can be ridden will also be stipulated, forbidding their use in pedestrian and other public areas, such as parks, for instance.
“There are many elderly people that use the promenade and although so far nothing serious has happened, we can’t sit back and wait for an accident to occur,” explained Mayor Antequera.
The Town Hall has opened a 20-day period during which residents and associations, etc, can make suggestions concerning the composition of the bylaw. Residents can access the draft text via the notice board on the municipal website.
