Sprucing up Playa Poniente

Motril Town Council plunges ahead with efforts to make Playa Poniente more attractive for tourism by going for the Blue Flag Award.

This award is an international distinction, certifying environmental & service excellence in coastal environments.

So, heavy machinery has been out demolishing or sprucing up tired-looking public toilets and lifeguard modules located on several strategic points along the beach.

This work includes modernising the water mains and sewage systems, eliminating their poor performance from previous years.

The project, which is being rolled out by the municipal Área de Playas (Beaches Department) counts on a budget of 45,000 euros, to cover the cost of, amongst other things, infrastructure upgrades that will allow for a higher-quality service for users and visitors.

Mayor García Chamorro explained, “Our goal is not only to regain the Blue Flag but to maintain and strengthen each year the quality standards that make Poniente Beach as one of the main tourist attractions on the Costa Tropical.”

It’s worth remembering that in July 2025, Poniente Beach already achieved the Bandera ‘Q de Calidad Turística, which certifies excellence in service and infrastructure management, a recognition it shares with nearby Playa de Granada.
