Body in the Boot

The Guardia Civil in Berja (Almería) found the body of a missing man in the boot of his car in San Agustín (El Ejido) on Monday.

The body of the 54-year-old, whose hands had been bound behind his back, was that of a public functionary and showed signs of violence. The victim, Antonio Campos, had been reported missing the previous afternoon.

The last time he had been seen was around 21.00h Saturday evening in his white, Volkswagen Passat. It is not clear whether he had been driving or was a passenger.

It was during hours of Monday that his car was found, parked on Calle Mirasol next to a horticultural market. The police inspected the car for clues and then came across his body found in the boot. They have also inspected footage from the market’s CCTV security camera.

Antonio Campos was well known in Berja where he participated in social activities, both cultural and religious in nature.

He had also worked in his home-town Town Hall of Berja for some years but was presently working in the El Ejido one. He was also an amateur historian linked to the Centro Virgitano de Estudios Históricos.

Editorial comment: We think that suicide can be ruled out.
