La Herradura School Controversy

The Almuñécar branch of the Partido Socialista (PSOE) has again criticised the Mayor for not carrying out his electoral pledge to build a new secondary school for La Herradura.

Party Secretary, Juan Moreno, points out that they have been demanding that the Town Hall provide an 8,000-sq/m plot for the new school since 2019 so that the Junta de Andalucía can build the much needed school on it. In fact, the demand for a new school goes back to 2008.

“The PP [governing party] has been in power for the last 15 years yet they are incapable of finding an adequate building plot for the school, despite the fact that Juanjo Ruiz Joya used to be the First Councillor for La Herradura and is now the Mayor of Almuñécar,” pointed out María Isabel Cabrera, Youth Secretary for the party.

PSOE Secretary Moreno said that they had proposed in a Plenary Meeting in March that the municipal budget be modified so that money could be set aside for the purchase of such a building plot. However, the governing party with its majority voted against it.

“It’s inconceivable that La Herrdura schoolchildren have to put up with this. The [existing] school cannot continue with its actual installations,” concluded María Isabel Cabrera.
