Creative Living by The Sea

The dream of living by the sea is one many share, but few truly realize. If you're reading this, chances are you've taken that leap and are now enjoying life on the stunning Costa Tropical.

Beyond its shimmering blue waters, dramatic landscapes, mountain vistas, and endless sunshine lies a vibrant world of art, craft, and community. Whether it’s the natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, or laid-back lifestyle that draws them, artists, musicians, and creatives of all kinds are inspired by this remarkable coastline—a place that truly stirs the soul.

Whether by luck or design, it’s entirely possible to build a creative business here and become part of a thriving community of like-minded entrepreneurs. The atmosphere is genuinely welcoming and supportive—you just need to know where to look.

My own journey began when I opened a small beachfront atelier in La Herradura. With no prior experience, I immersed myself in the creative world, exploring my artistic voice through tufting and sharing what I learned. (For the uninitiated, tufting is a technique used to create carpets and wall hangings with a tufting gun.) Today, I host regular workshops and support local businesses through collaborative events.

Upcycling has become a true passion—especially when it comes to lighting. I love reinventing vintage lamps, handcrafting bespoke shades from beautiful fabrics, and turning them into striking, one-of-a-kind pieces. Many of these reinvented lamps now light up the homes of those who’ve visited the atelier, drawn in by curiosity, conversation, or a shared love for craftsmanship.

If you share my love for the “make do and mend” ethos and prefer supporting local artisans over big corporations, this lifestyle is both achievable and rewarding. The local markets in Almuñécar and Nerja are treasure troves of pre-loved furniture and decorative gems—ideal for those willing to invest a little creativity and care.

And don’t overlook what’s left by the bins; a bit of ‘skip diving’ can uncover some real finds. In fact, some of my earliest pieces were rescued by friends who saw their potential and brought them to my atelier for a little TLC.

Creating a home here is more than furnishing a space—it’s about expressing who you are. Whether you’re here full-time or setting up a second home, the process of finding beauty in a new land is both cathartic and fun. It’s a chance to style your space in a way that brings you joy and reflects your unique personality.

The international community here brings together a mix of styles and influences, often resulting in homes that are unconventional, vibrant, and deeply personal—even if a few pieces were pulled from a skip! It’s all about embracing creativity and authenticity.

Support from fellow creatives and small businesses has been essential in getting started. Groups like Costa Women – Costa Tropical offer both social and professional connections, with regular meetups that are well worth attending. They’re a fantastic way to gain encouragement, network, and find platforms to share your work.

And if your goal is simply to explore your creativity, you’ve come to the right place. The area is alive with workshops hosted by talented artists and crafters—ideal for discovering hidden talents, learning new skills, and meeting others who share your passions. You might just surprise yourself and create something truly special for your new home.
