The Councillor for Agriculture for the Gualchos-Castell de Ferro Town Hall has just resigned after a worker died on his farm.
The 32-year-old worker from Russia was suddenly taken ill whilst whitewashing and putting up the plastic on the Councillor’s greenhouse.

His workmates took him to the closest centro de salud (which is in Castell de Ferro) but he died whilst receiving medical assistance. He had been complaining of chest pains.
The Guardia Civil and officials from the Inspección de Trabajo have begun investigation into the circumstances of his death and the victim’s labour status.
As is normal in the summer when working in a greenhouse, he had begun the day very early yet by 10.30h that same morning he was certified as dead, despite efforts by doctors and nurses to revive him.
What the inspectors and the police are investigating is whether he was legally employed and if so, what his work contract entailed.
The socialist councillor voluntarily stepped down from his post just two days after the death, although he has not been accussed of wrong doing. The councillor has four workers in his employment, all of whom are legally employed for the seasonal work.
However, he hired outside workers from a company to carry out the plastic-laying and whitewashing of the greenhouse and says that he is unaware whether they are legally employed by the company.

Reader’s comment: “I think Spain doesn’t have enough safeguards from those exploiting illegal immigrants. I also don’t think illegal immigrants should be allowed to work until their asylum refugee status is confirmed.
I read this on the EU website.
“The Spanish Government has recently relaxed its criteria for regularising irregular migrants by introducing a residence permit for illegal immigrants with a work contract.
To be eligible, they must have lived in Spain for at least 2 years, have a clean criminal record and have an employment contract for just 20 hours per week – criteria that are particularly lax. Alongside this scheme are 12-month residence permits for migrants undergoing training in sectors with shortages, despite the fact that few of them actually obtain long-term employment.
This increase in regularisations could, however, encourage the exploitation of migrants and spread of criminal networks. Indeed, in June 2024 the police dismantled a large network involved in distributing fake work contracts”
