The emblematic castle to the north of the Sierra Nevada, El Castillo de La Calahorra, has just been purchased by the Provincial Council of Granada.
The castle, completed in the early 1500s and until now in private hands, had been used as a film location in such films as the The Kingdom of Heaven with Orlando Blum (2005). More recently it was used in the HBO series House of the Dragon. In fact, you can go back to 1974 for to the film Stardust, starring 70s pop star, David Essex.

The castle needs work on it, both inside and out. For example, it needs bathrooms if is to be opened to the public, entailing mains water and sewage disposal. In the exterior the access lane needs to be much improved
But this doesn’t mean that it will be closed up whilst everything is being sorted out because the tasks will be carried out in stages, permitting partial access throughout the year.
One such urgent task, besides the bathrooms, is to carry out an architectural study to find out how much (human) weight each floor can take.
The Mayor of La Calahorra, Francis Rodríguez, considers the acquisition to be very positive for the village and the local area, as it will attract tourism.
