The socialist Spokeswoman with the Motril Town Council, Gádor Domínguez, is going to put forward a motion in the next Plenary Meeting for the authorisation of metal detectors on beaches.
We have all seen people out with metal detectors on beaches after a storm, searching the beach for lost valuables, etc. Well, apparently and according to the PSOE Spokeswoman, this hobby is growing across Spain but Motril is in danger of being left out.

This, she says, is because Motril has no bylaw to regulate the use of such devices on its beaches; hence the call to bring one into being.
She considers that it helps the environment as well as provides a leisure activity, but there would need to be local rules on when and where you can use them. She pointed out that Motril residents with detectors have to go to Torrenueva Costa, which does have a bylaw in place, regulating their use.
She considers that people who practice this hobby provide a selfless and beneficial service for residents and visitors, as they contribute to beach cleaning, retrieving dangerous objects like fishhooks and other pieces of abandoned or lost metal that could harm beachgoers.
She pointed out that such a bylaw would have to lay out conditions, times and area restricions. Those that use them must collect all the metalic rubbish they find and remove them from the beach, and lastly there must be a clear protocol for any valuable historic finds, which must be handed in directly to the authorities.
Editorial comment: I can’t be certain, but I would think that many people with metal detectors are just going to chuck back down worthless metal object and pocket any lost coins or jewellery. Could be wrong of course. Do please leave a comment if you do use a metal detector and my “concerns” are unfounded and unfair.
