Mancomunidad Sewage Spill

The main opposition party in Almuñécar, Convergencia Andaluza, made the claim that there was possible sewage running past the chiringuitos on Playa Tesorillo onto the sand.

According to the CA, contaminated water was coming from a rainwater pipe under road from the housing above.

For this reason, they demand that the Town Hall acts immediately to stop it from continuing and investigate where it is coming from, in order to guarantee public health.

Again, according to the CA, this first started happening in June and since then the flow has become more copious, especially on weekends.

“The strong smell and the look of the discharge — with indications that it contains organic material —  leads one to suspect that it is a sewage discharge, probably from the housing behind and above the beach, which could discharging sewage directly into the barranco,” suggested the CA communiqué.

Party Spokesman, José Garciolo, said that if it were confirmed that it is sewage then it would be a direct infringement of the Ley de Aguas and the La Ley de Costas.

The next day the Mancomunidad del Costa Tropical, whose function is to guarantee mains water and sewage disposal, declared that inspectors from Aguas y Servicios had inspected the area the previous week, in the company of Guardia-Civil officers belonging to the Seprona environmental-protection unit and had taken samples to determine the nature of the discharge.

According to preliminary results, the Mancomunidad says, the discharge is not sewage but rather rainwater filtering down from the barranco which discharges onto the beach via parking area. There is an urbanización above it and the water could be coming from people emptying their swimming pools. In no way, therefore does it contain faecal matter, claims the Mancomunidad.

The discharge, the Mancomunidad goes on to say, has no connection with the private, sewage network belonging to the urbanización. Furthermore, several week ago Aguas y Servicios had informed the Chairperson of the Urbanización’s administration that this discharge had to be corrected

The same day that the CA reported the suspicious discharge that had appeared on Playa Tesorillo, Aguas y Servicios had gone about sealing the pipe.
