Lifeguard coverage began last weekend, ending a controversial delay on having this very necessary service to guarantee safety on beaches, as much as it can be guaranteed, that is.
The Mayor explained that there had been bureacratic hold ups and there was the problem of transferring Cruz Roja volunteers to a private arrangement. He also said that a company, (Forgeser) had already entered the winning bid.

On the upside, he also pointed out, that the contracts for lifeguard coverage would not only be extended to cover a two year period, (which would be renewable for another two) but that it would also cover Semana Santa and the Fiestas de la Virgen del Rosario, which is always held on the first Sunday of October.
Lastly, Mayor Javier Ortega explained that the amount of lifeguards on duty would vary according to beach occupation.
Editorial comment: the last comment concerning beach occupation does seem to provide a loophole for abuse.
