Cases of Measles

The Dirección General de Salud Pública belonging to the Junta has confirmed two new cases of measles in the last week within Andalucia, bringing the total number of cases so far this year to 88.

The two new cases, two unvaccinated children aged 9 and 13, are associated with the Torrox outbreak, according to a Junta press release. About a quarter of the cases were imported ones, originating in Morocco (17), Belgium (one), Denmark (one), and the United Kingdom (one).

Of the non-imported cases, 23 are isolated cases in which the source of infection is unknown: six cases from the city of Málaga, six from Vera (Almería), two from Marbella (Málaga), one from Cuevas de Almanzora (Almería), one from Chirivel (Almería), one from Torremolinos (Málaga), one from Álora (Málaga), one from Casabermeja (Málaga), one from Calañas (Huelva), one from the city of Huelva, one from Palos de la Frontera (Huelva), and one from the city of Granada.

A third of the cases were people under 15 years of age but rest were of people of up to 70. Only two cases had a documented history of vaccination with one dose; the remaining cases were unvaccinated or their vaccination status was unknown (among them the cases from Morocco).

By province the number of cases this year are: Almería 17, Granada four, Huelva 16, Malaga 50 and Sevilla one. However, in recent weeks the number of cases are on a downward trend but the majority are still coming from Morocco.

As for the rest Spain, there have been just over 300 cases so far this year and in Europe, cases have been reported in Austria (116), Belgium (10), and Germany (10).
