AECC Warns About Sun Exposure

Skin cancer has increased by 40% in the last four years, according to the Asociación Española contra el Cáncer.

In 2024 there were 21,000 new cases in Spain, which, the AECC points out, could be significanly reduced if people took certain precautions. In Granada there were 386 new cases.

For this reason, the AECC on the European Day for the Prevention of Skin Cancer (yesterday) launched a campaign about it, calling upon the population to protect itself adequately this summer to avoid this kind of cancer.

It is especially aimed at children and adolescents, outside workers and people who practice outside sports.

They recommend visiting www.protegetupiel.es where you can find relevant advice on the subject as will as what symptoms to watch out for.

According to the American Skin-Cancer Association, “skin cancer is the out-of-control growth of abnormal cells in the epidermis, the outermost skin layer, caused by unrepaired DNA damage that triggers mutations. These mutations lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.

The main types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC).”
