A Town-Hall delegation from Almuñécar participated this week in events in Morocco, as part of a mission organised by the Provincial Council of Granada.
Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joya, the Councilor for Tourism, Beatriz González Orce, and the Head of Tourism, Felipe Puertas Ramírez went the Spanish Embassy in Rabat on the 21st, where they met up with the Chairman of the Provincial Count, Francis Rodríguez and Marta Nievas who is the Provincial Deputy for Tourism.

There they met the Spanish Ambassador in Morocco, Enrique Ojeda to push Almuñécar as a tourist destination, as also present were local business leaders and members of the Moroccan press.
“We have come to Morocco to build bridges through the common history we share, with respect, and with the clear desire to build a future,” said the Mayor of Almuñécar, adding, ” We are deeply grateful for the hospitality of the Moroccan people and for the extraordinary willingness of the ambassador, Mr. Enrique Ojeda.” He rabbited on a bit more but you get the picture.
The next day they visited Casablanca where they met up with tour operators, travel agencies and the media specialised in tourism.
Editorial comment: the “shared past” refers to when Spain joined the late 19th-Century scrabble for Africa and gobbled what parts of the North-African coast that the French hadn’t already claimed. After nearly getting chucked out in the 1920s Riff Wars by tribal rebels, Spain managed to hang onto Morocco until the 1950s.
Now, for North African and Middle Eastern investment in Almuñécar, most of that goes back to Benavides who managed to get investment from Kuwait, for example; hence Plaza Kuwait and Syria; Hence Plaza Damasco. And there is also Plaza de Abderraman I, but I can’t remember who he got the dosh from but it was most likely Syria too, given where Abd al-Rahman I was from. Benny bought a large farm in Morocco, too but with what.. is a controversial topic.
