The provincial offices of Costas will begin restoration work on beaches along Costa Tropical that were damaged during the spring gales of March and April.
Its head office, which is in Madrid, said that in a few days they would order emergency work on two beaches along the Costa Tropical.

The most affected areas along the coast are Playa de La Charca in Salobrreña and Playa de Castillo de Baños, belonging to the inland village of Polopos. Both beaches lost a lot of sand allowing the sea to reach the paseo seawall in the case of Salobreña.
Therefore, in Salobreña they will be lorrying in river silt to replace the 40,000 cubic metres lost, which will come from Rio Guadalfeo.
As for Castillo de Baños, which lost 15,000 cubic metres of sand and shale, leaving a surface of little more that rocks and bolders, the beach will be restored with silt from nearby ramblas.
It is calculated that to replace that much sand, etc, it will cost 468,721 euros.
Editorial comment: the Spanish have a saying regarding this: “lo que robas de la mar, la mar lo robará de otro lado, meaning what you take from the sea, the sea will take it back from further along. We build breakwaters so that the sea drops its silt to build up beaches, but that silt has come from somewhere else… it’s an expensive losing battle, it seems.
