The Mancomunidad del Valle de Lecrín has begun the refuse collection of organic waste, which residents should leave in the brown bins clearly marked, orgánica.
The villages included in the new scheme are Lecrín, El Pinar, Albuñuelas, El Valle, Nigüelas and Villamena and the collection days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 08.00h until the collection round is complete.
The Chairman of the Mancomunidad, Manuel Luis explained, “It’s about the implantation [of this system] that has been pending for some time, but at least it is in place in these six municipalities.”
The sort of things that residents can leave in the brown bins are things egg shells and domestic vegetable peelings, in general.
But it’s not just vegetable waste as bones and meat scraps, kitchen paper, dirty tissues and napkins, minor amounts of cuttings from pruning (i.e., don’t take the mickey) fish, shellfish leftovers and coffee grains & tea leaves/bags, bottle corks and even sawdust.

“It important that waste bags are properly tied up for the health of the refuse collectors because the vehicles have no automatic emptying systems so that it has to be done by hand.
“In the case of doubt,” explains the Vice-Chairman of the Mancomunidad, Esther Molina, “it is best to leave you rubbish in the grey bins because if the brown bins contain the wrong refuse, the recycing plant could issue a fine to the Town Hall.”
