The ferry company, Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea now operates a regular ferry service between Motril and Melilla.
This crossing between Motril and the North-African, Spanish enclave city of Melilla is considered an Obligación de Servicio Público (OSP) or in other words, it is considered an essential communications route.

According to the company CEO, Sergio Vélez, Armas Trasmediterránea will work “tirelessly to guarantee quality, sea communications with sailing-adapted timetables.” He also pointed out that this ferry route is perfect for students from Melilla who will study in Granada University
So far, they have transported 849 lorries taking food and building materials for the city of Melilla.
The Chairman of the Motril Port Authorities, José García Fuentes, said that this connection favours tourism, as well as functionaries (civil servants) who work in Melilla but reside in mainland Spain.
Finally, the ferry that will work the route, El Volcán de Timanfaya, which has undergone drydock repairs and renovations, has a capacity to carry 950 passengers and 300 vehicles. It has a cafeteria, and a children’s play area, an area for pets and cabins adapted for people with mobility problems.
Furthermore, footpassengers who do not wish to take their vehicle on the crossing have free parking for their cars in Motril Port for up to seven days.
