Thousands Demostrate in Granada

Granada joined 40 other cities across the country with protests in favour of affordable housing; something that is unattainable for the majority of young people.

According to official figures, over 4,000 people demonstrated in the streets, who started off at noon from Triunfo and ended at the Fuente de las Batallas.

A number of platforms shared the organisation of the event, including, Albayzín Habitable, La Calle Mata, Realejo Habitable, Sindicato de Vivienda de Granada, Stop Desahucios Granada 15M-Centro and Stop Desahucios Granada 15M-Zaidín

Some of the slogans borne on banners were: Muerte a la propiedad, No es turismofobia; es defensa al territorio, El barrio no se vende and No hay agua para tanto turista.

The organisers consider that It is no accident that in Granada, as is the case throughout the country, more and more people face abusive rentals, speculation and the threat of losing their home.”

Furthermore, they claim: “housing in Granada has become a luxury while neighborhoods lose inhabitants expelled by tourists and unasumable rentals.”

They blame the City Council and the Junta de Andalucía for not finding solutions and instead back evictions of families in economically vulnerable situations.
