Semana Santa Brotherhood Implodes

The Cofradía del Señor de la Humildad Atado a la Columna, which is one of the oldest Semana-Santa brotherhoods in Salobreña, has ceased to exist after 256 years.

What has brought this on is a confrontation between the local priest and the Head of the Brotherhood (Hermano Mayor).

The Brotherhood Board (Junta Directiva de La Hermandad) decided to cease the Capataz de Paso (The person who marks the pace and decides when to rest up along the procession route) because of disagreements between him and other Brotherhood members. The Hermano Mayor (Senior Brother) considers that he has this preogative to dismiss the Capataz, which was initially backed by the parish priest.

However, a small group of followers of this brotherhood questioned his authority and began to presure the Hermano Mayor to reverse his decision. Then the Priest changed his mind and backed the rebellion and convoked an Extraordinary Meeting of the Board and sacked the whole Junta Directiva (Governing Board)

From there, it all went down hill and the brotherhood folded, which is a pity because last year the number of brotherhood members grew from 49 to 105 in 2024.
