Whilst media attention is zooming in on Paiporta and other affected towns in Valencia, there have been three minor earth tremors in the Comarca de Axarquía in the province of Málaga in less than a week.
These tremors were too small for them to be noticed, but from Halloween to Saturday the 2nd, the ground rumbled under our feet, reminding us that we are on a fault line.
According to the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) these seismic movements, in chronological order, took place under Cútar, Iznate and Benamargosa. In none of them was there any damage caused, much less injuries.
The first struck at 21.41h in the evening of Halloween in Cútar; if it had been much stronger, you wouldn’t have needed to dress up to scare the living daylights out of the 600 inhabitants. How strong was it? Three degrees on the Richter Scale.
The second happened hardly a minute later under Iznate, registering 2.2 degrees at a depth of 50 kilometres.
The last of the three took place Saturday night at 21.31h with the epicentre beneath Benamargosa, registering 2.6º on the Richter Scale.
Since then, there have been another 13 that registered more than one degree in on the Mediterranean coast beween Huelva and Murcia. The IGN doesn’t report anything below one degree in intensity.
