Protests against Quarry Blasts

The Asociación Vecinos por Lobres complained that at 14.15h on the 12th, blasting at the Lobres quarry shook the school and produced a hanging cloud of dust.

As kids are back at school, the children attending the said junior school, Colegio Público Cervantes, were eating their school dinners when the detonation occurred.

The said association claims that the quarry is operating without a valid licence and that the Town Hall is aware of it.

It’s not only the explosions in the quarry that concern the residents of Lobres but also the fine dust and soot-like particles that hang in the air before descending upon the village, which could have a long-term affect on people’s health, especially those that have respiratory problems.

“To date, we do not know its exact origin [the fine soot particles] nor composition, nor what adverse affects it might have on our health,” read a statement from the association, adding, “We live in a natural, rural environment yet we have to suffer the environmental consequences of living next to a quarry.”

The association has requested an air analysis in the village but they are still waiting for a response. For this reason, they request that the Town Hall and the Environmental Deptartment belonging to the Junta de Andalucia “take urgent action” to monitor the air quality that they breath in the village.
