The Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) registered seismic activity in the Atlantic off Portugal measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale yesterday morning.
The shockwave was felt mostly in western Andalucia, especialyl in Huelva, Cadiz and Sevilla, although it was also felt to a lesser degree in Málaga, Granada and Jaén.
This is the same area which produced an earthquake measuring 8.4 on the Richter Scale which pretty much destroyed Lisbon in the 18th Century as it was immediately followed by the arrival of a tsunami.
The earthquake (or seaquake) which occured at 06.11h at a depth of 19 kilometres, was also felt in Extremadura and Galicia, as well as Portugual (logically), and Morocco.
The first calls came in to 112 from people to say that they had felt the earthquake from 06.15h from residents of Huelva, Sevilla and Jaén, although no damage was reported.
