Down but not Out

It wasn’t a knock-out blow that landed on the Almuñécar chiringuito when a fire wiped out the kitchen; it just left it momentarily groggy, as they were soon back on their feet.

The Chiringuito Deportivo in Almuñécar, which originally opened at the end of the 80s, reopened after frenetic work to get it back on its feet and summer customers through the door.

This chiringuito, which isn’t actually on a beach but on the opposite side of the road to the Aquatropica water park, has alway been very popular, serving fresh-caught fish out of Motril-Port, fish market.

The damage caused to the kitchen area is valued at around 60,000 euros, some of which will be covered by the insurance company and the rest from the family-run-business pockets. There was also the case of 16 employees who were suddenly out of a job who have now regained employment.

But the owners needn’t have worried because the bookings were mounting with habitual customers champing at the bit to eat at one of its 38 tables.
