Racing in La Rábita

Forty drivers are set to compete in a road rally along the old N-340 in La Rábita tomorrow!

This is the tenth year that this race, the Cronometrada de La Rábita, has taken place from this coastal dependency of Albuñol.

The Chairman of the Federación Andaluza de Automovilismo, Manuel Alonso, was at Albuñol Town hall to co-announce the against-the-clock race, together with the Mayoress, María José Sánchez.

Normal cars, as well as kart-cross ones, will run this one-kilometre race. A kart-cross is a racing buggy built from a small tubular chassis and a medium-cylinder motorbike engine (between 500 for twin-cylinder 2-stroke and 650cc for twin-cylinder, 4-stroke engines). Their weight to power ratio means that they go like a bat out of hell.

The racing programme starts at 08.00h with the inspection of the vehicles and competitor’s registration. Then at 10.00h, the old road will be closed to the general public and one hour after that, the actual race begins, starting with a training lap or leg. Each driver will have three attempts to obtain his or her best time.

The event should conclude around 15.00h, which is when the awards will be given out at the parking area on the Paseo Marítimo de La Rábita.

Last year saw Luis García win the car category in his Fiat Punto managing a minimum time of one minute, 34 seconds and 709 milliseconds. The racing buggy champion was Javier Avilés from Córdoba, completing the run in one minute, 25 seconds, 172 milliseconds.

Finally, the course for this kind of against-the-clock races is only one kilometre long and the straightest part cannot be more than 100 metres long.
