Gymnast Dies from Meningitis

The Spanish sporting world was thrown into commotion when the news that the 17-year-old gymnast, María Herranz had died from meningitis on Thursday.

SPN Gymnast Dies of MeningitisMaría, who has represented Spain on the trampoline, died in the early hours of the 18th in Hospital Universitario de Guadalajara. Last autumn she had participated in the World Gymnastics Competition which was held in Birmingham in the UK.

In last year’s Spanish Championships, she came fourth on the minitramp and fifth in synchronised jumping.

“María suddenly left us, caused by meningitis, succumbing in hardly 24 hours, leaving our town desolated,” said the Mayor of Cabanillas del Campo, her hometown, José García Salinas, adding, “She was a lovely girl: sweet, kind and loved by all.” The Mayor has declared two days of official mourning.

Because the disease is highly contagious, the Sección Epidemiología in Guadalajara (Castilla-La Mancha) has activated the protocol against viral infection amongst those she had been in contact with, recommending the use of chemoprophylaxis (the administering of drugs to prevent the development of disease) as soon as possible.
