There is no doubt that our reservoirs have gulped the Easter rainfall down filling their bellies but it's not enough.
In fact the Costa Tropical could make a saving of a million cubic metres of water if April doesn’t come up with its promise, Abril Aguas Mil (April showers) thanks to a drought plan that is ready to be whipped out of a dusty draw and put into play. This plan has three levels of saving: 5%, 10% and 20% according to needs.
The trouble with the coast is its bloated summer populations and the massive water consumption it brings. During 2022 the coast consumed, 4,905,788-million cubic metres. Almuñécar accounted for over three million cubic metres, just by itself.
Most municipalities within Valle Rio Verde suck their water up from the water tables and demand is higher than what the water table is able to replenish themselves naturally. Otivar, for example gets it water from spring in La Suerte, which is that area above La Era and below the main road. This spring is fed by the run off from Sierra de Los Guájares.
So, with progress finally being made on connecting up the Rules Reservoir, farmers have their fingers crossed but all the pipework in the world will no push water through taps if the reservoir doesn’t fill. This year, the snow on our side of the Sierra Nevada will make a good difference.
