Further investigation into the incident where four young men accidentally drank corrosive liquid in a bar the Ski village has clarified how it happened
This incident took place last Friday morning and we reported on it on the 11th.
Firstly, the detergent comes in 5-litre bottles so it is a bit clumsy for pouring small amounts, so the bar in question emptied some into an empty gin bottle without a dose top and it was kept near the sink behind the bar.
However, somebody thought it a good wheeze to steal the bottle of ‘gin’ and start offering it around outside the bar on the street. The four lads, in their late teens and early 20s, took swigs of it and almost immediately began vomiting blood.
They were taken to the medical facilities in the ski village of Pradollano where they received first aid and then taken down to the Hospital Clínico Universitario San Cecilio in the city in an ambulance from the Zaidín medical centre.
One of the victims was discharged that same day (they had been taken to the hospital around five in the morning) whilst the other three were put in the ICU ward. By Sunday, they were transferred to a normal ward.
The owner of the bar who revealed that somebody had not only stolen the gin bottle containing the detergent, but also several cans of tonic. He asked, “What would we gain by serving shot glasses of corrosive liquid,” adding that they never thought that anybody would steal the bottle from beside the sink and that they had also recently had a visit from health inspectors and they had said nothing about using an empty gin bottle for the liquid.
The theft was captured on CCTV and the recordings were handed over to the police. The outside camera showed that whilst the thief did pass the bottle around, he did not drink from it himself.
