Something is missing from the busy streets of Granada... hireable electric scooters! The company has gone bust!
This scooter-hire service belonging to an American company, Superpedestrian, had been running since October 2022
Three months into having renewed the contract with the City Council, the mother company based in Massachusetts, went bust, taking all its European affiliates with it.
The question is, what will happen to the money that users had deposited in their virtual app accounts? The app no longer works. More and more users are complaining and some have lodged an official complaint before the law courts. Were talking about in many cases 50-odd euros.
There’s no doubt that citizens found this form of conveyance very practical, even those that usually rode motor scooters and motorbikes, even though it was not that cheap. However, they often run offers whereby if you put 20 euros into your app account, they would match it, so not all of the money in the accounts was real, in the sense that it was virtual credit. Furthermore, the University of Granada had a deal with Superpedestrian whereby university students could enjoy a cheap rate.
Why many feel disgruntled, apart from the money they have lost, is that there was no prior warning from the company that the service would soon be discontinued.
The Town Council, after being approached by clients, stated that it has absolutely no responsibility nor liability in the affair, so don’t come knocking on their door.
