Playa Granada Mast Protests II

We ran an article in the January paper edition on the protests over the placing of a mobile-phone mast on Playa Granada; there have since been developments.

MOT Protests over Playa Granada Phone MastThis 40-metre-high mast would provide 5G coverage for Playa Granada; somewhere that has had deficient mobile coverage before, however the residents of one of the urbanizaciones there rejected it being placed so close to their homes, for health reasons, as well as aesthetic ones.

Furthermore, they consider that the proximity of such a structure could affect, negatively, their property values.

Work on the construction of this infrastructure ground to a halt in December because of this social opposition. In the meantime, talks between the disgruntled residents and the Town Hall have been taking place. These residents want the site for these communication installations to be moved to the Polígono industrial Algaidas.

The Chairman of the Urbanizacion Claro de Luna’s community association, Paco Ruíz, explained that they are waiting for the next meeting with the Town Hall to deal with the affair, after having proposed their location change at the last meeting.

One of the problems is that the protesting residents didn’t make their objections known when they had the chance – any project must be exposed to public scrutiny before it is given the definite approval. In fact, they didn’t complain until the structure was already under construction on the chosen site.

Editorial comment: it all sounds very ‘Nimby.’ You can read the paper edition article here.
