Small villages all over Spain are draining away their tiny populations, because of a lack of a future for young people.
Canillas de Aceituno in the Axarquía is no exception, but they plan to do something about it rather than just stand around and wring their hands: for every birth in the village the mother will receive 750 euros, which will cover the nappies for a while, at least.
They will also give grants up to 400 euros towards the cost of transport for schoolchildren empadronado in the village.
But it’s not only if you give birth to a child in the village (having lived there at least a year before applying and no later than three months after giving birth) but the grant will also be available for people who adopt a child.
The Mayor of Canillas de Aceituno, Vicente Campos (PP), pointed out that the aid will be 750 euros per child would go towards pharmacy costs, food and hygiene products for the child.
Those interested can consult the grant conditions on the Town Hall noticeboard and its webpage, where information is available informing what documents you will need to bring.
