Fatal Distraction

These accidents took place on Tuesday and in one of them a driver died. They happened on the A-92 near Santa Fe with the second one caused by the tailback created by the first.

GRA CM Fatal Impatience Autovia Accident DC23The first accident occurred at 18.20h on the lanes heading towards Granada city. A caller informed 112 that there was a grey car on its roof in the middle of the lanes.

The Guardia Civil de Tráfico were despatched, as well as a road-maintenance crew and an ambulance. The occupants, two men aged 37 and 38 were taken to Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves.

This obviously caused a long tailback and one hour, ten minutes later a car ran into the back of a large lorry (19.30h).

This happened only 300 metres from the first accident. The Policía Local from Santa Fe, who had been directing traffic, had already left the scene but had to rush back to deal with the second accident.

This time the Granada fire service was needed as the car had been travelling at some speed so the driver needed to be cut out of the wreck. The paramedics onboard the ambulance found that the 70-year-old man from Granada had died upon impact. He appears to have been distracted and didn’t hit the brakes when he came across the stationary lorry, as there were no skid marks.

The tailback grew even further so that the traffic flow wasn’t completely restored until just past midnight.
