Shrinking Albuñuelas

The village of Albuñuelas in the Valle de Lecrín finds itself in a situation of "extreme population loss," according to a Provincial-Council report.

GRA LEC AlbuñuelasCouncil Chairman, Francis Rodríguez, explained that the Council had studied all the villages within the province to record their demographical situation. In the case of Albuñuelas, it has a population density of 5.62 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Chairman Francis Rodríguez thanked the tremendous work carried out by the University of Granada that will help the Council to pinpoint where it should focus its efforts to combat rural, population loss. He also said that they are already working on a route map for “revitalising repopulation” by giving young people opportunities to find work in their place of birth instead of having to abandon it in search of employment.

They have already approved funding for providing any village in the province facing population loss to carry out public works and services that could place 76m euros in municipal coffers of selected municipalities.

According to the study drawn up by the University of Granada, there are 41 municipalities within the province suffering from population loss, based on population density.

Editorial comment: bear in mind that the urban nucleus of the village is quite small yet the extent of the municipal boundaries makes it the largest municipality in the Valle de Lecrín, so you can expect its population density to be ‘low.’
