Reader: Computer Problems

A reader writes in to ask if other are having the same problem as he is with his computer.

Readers Letter 400x250Dear Ed,

I read the Seaside Gazette online every day and find it very interesting and informative, but sometimes everything freezes and the only way out is to shut my computer down.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Regards
Mervyn Bird

I’m finding that no only the mag but several other webpages are taking time to load at the moment. I thought that it was Internet coverage or in the case of the mag, server work.

Possibly heat-related. First thing to try would be to get the case off and clean the crap out of the fans. You can do it yourself if you have a box computer and you’re feeling brave. If you’re not feeling brave or if it’s a laptop, you’re probably better off paying someone to do it.

This is fairly common. It can be due to many things. May be faulty computer, in which case if it is not under guarantee probably cheaper to throw away and replace. But first I would make sure that your anti-virus is up to date and a recent full scan done.

Next look at tracking cookies. You may have a few thousand built up over time. These can slow things down and sometimes lead to a crash.

I had a customer a few years ago where I was servicing his cooling towers (nothing to do with computers) and when I came in he looked startled as he was afraid it was his wife visiting. He explained that every time he switched on his computer he got ‘naked tarts’ cavorting and could not make them go away. He told me his anti-virus was running OK but had never heard of a tracking cookie remover.

We downloaded Malwarebytes and it showed he had several thousand. Ran the cleaner but still a few hundred left. So, rebooted into ‘SAFE Mode’ and ran again.

Some trackers are very cleaver and load before Windows starts normally. Most now removed. We then ran CCleaner and did the same. This removed the remaining problems. Computer ran much faster and without distractions. He said I possible saved his marriage!

Sometimes things are so messed that a complete re-format and fresh installation of Windows is needed. Make sure you back up all your files before you do this. IObit Advanced system care is also a good free program to see what may be wrong.

Just a few ideas, have fun

Sometimes it will not load with my smartphone I haven’t tried it with the computer. If I wait a few hours it will load again.
