The body of a construction worker who was trapped by falling masonry whilst working on an old school building was later found that same afternoon.
Three builders were working on the Colegio Adoratrices in Logroño (la Roja) on the 25th of last month when part of the building came down.
The Councillor for Safety at the Logroño City Hall, Francisco Iglesias, said that the building had collapsed in a cascade with the top and third floor falling onto the other two below.
The other two workers were pulled out alive, although injured and rushed to Hospital San Pedro.
Experts were brought in with specialised dogs to locate the third person, whilst the Policía Nacional used a drone to gain footage of areas too unstable to work on.
Removing large sections of concrete and exposed reinforcing bars, which in places were left dangling, made progress very slow.
Apart from the trained dogs and the drone used, rescued were helped in their efforts to locate the third man by his mobile – luckily it still worked and they could hear it ringing.
As for what caused the building to collapse, experts believe that one of the supporting pillars was unintentionally damaged – the workers had been working on the lift shaft.
Whatever the case, the building will now be completely demolished because of its severely damaged structure
