Biggest Mural Around

What do you do when somebody builds a block of flats smack in the middle of your sea view? Turn the block into a painting of the lost view.

Yes, probably the largest mural in the world, certainly in Europe, will be painted onto the back wall of three apartment blocks in Velilla, Almuñécar.

The French, building developer, Les Rivages, wants to provide a sea view for the 15 luxury villas on the hillside behind Velilla beach using the three intervening apartment blocks as a painter’s canvas, effectively making the blocks appear as if they were transparent.

He explained that he had invested 20m euros in this building project, which should be completed by spring 2024. The villas will cover between 230 and 450 sq/m with terrace, pool and jacuzzi included.

The artist who will produce this colossal work, covering an area of 6,000 sq/m, is 61-year-old, José Fernández Ríos from Jaén. Rivages had come across this artist in Estepona, where the company offices are. It is also in Estepona that Fernández Ríos had painted the largest mural in Spain

Of course, you cannot just slap paint on the back wall of somebody’s apartment, so starting several years ago Les Rivages got in contact with the apartment owners, who were all for it, it appears. In fact, the developer will also have the facades of the blocks repainted too.

Up until now, the largest mural in the world is in Argentina and covers 1,400 metres, created by Martín Ron and depicts Maradona – how could it be otherwise.
