The Almuñécar, chief, opposition party, the CA, criticises the lack of access to the cliffs on Punta de La Mona, as the way is blocked by "luxury constructions."
Convergencia Andaluza points out that under the Ley 22/1988 de Costas, access to the sea is guaranteed, yet people are unable to visit this protected strip of coastline.
“Access to the cliffs is denied by walls and large gates, which had been used since time immemorial by anglers and walkers,” reads their communiqué.
The CA goes on to say that it is natural for people to wish to enjoy, in peace, the exceptional location of their property but that it “shouldn’t be at the expense of cutting off access to the cliffs and occupation of the coastal strip of protected land, guaranteed under the law.”
It adds, “in practice it is as if access to the sea and the protected coastal strip for public use have been privatised for the exclusive use of a few.”
For the above reasons, they demand that the responsible public administration (the Town Hall and Costas) should take measures to permit free access to the Punta de La Mona Cliffs and transit along the protected coastal strip.
Editorial comment: with the municipal elections coming up next year, this appears to be a calculated electoral risk of upsetting the few, whose votes they weren’t counting on, to fish for the larger catch of those that resent the privileges of the “affluent.”
