Two young men, Rúben and Víctor from Granada decided to buy a 30-year-old Peugeot 205, do it up and set off to cross a desert.
And they were not alone because we’re talking about the Uniraid 2022 along with 150 other teams from Spain, Portugal and Andorra, which took place last month in Morocco.
This competition has three conditions for competitors who wish to participate: the car has to be at least 20-years old; the engine cannot have an engine of more than an 1100cc and you have to be under 28 years old.
The Uniraid is not just about letting 20-year olds scream around the desert in desperate bangers because it also has a solidarity side to it because each car must carry school material for remote villages
First of all, the teams had to get to Meknes, where the first of the five legs will take place, with a total distance of 2,500 kilometres with notebooks, pens, pencils, clothes, balls, toys and even computer screens, rattling around in the back amongst all the spares that might come in handy when you’re up to your knees in sand and your car has declared, “sod it, Im’ staying here.”
There was a mechanical-service lorry that accompanied the participants, which was financed through the 2,000-euro subscription team. Furthermore the cars were sent out in groups of five, so that they could help each other out, rather than laughing, hysterically as they plough by.
Most of the cars were without aircon and with temperatures around 40 even a mini fan on the dash was a welcome luxury.
Anyway, it started around the 2nd of last month and according to the competition’s Facebook account, they were all home in their respective countries by the 23rd.
Sounds like great fun… if you’re still in your twenties.
